The ALC has a faculty of over fifty teachers. Information for teachers interested in working at the American Language center, Damascus , Syria. The ALC has a faculty of over 50 teachers. About 70% of the faculty are American; the others include British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Syrian and other nationalities.
In most terms, there may be opportunities for new teachers to join the ALC faculty. The ALC does not normally hire teachers from outside of Syria ; positions cannot be negotiated by telephone, fax or e-mail.
The ALC does regularly hire native speakers of English on a local-hire basis but will only consider applicants who are physically present in Damascus. The ALC has four terms per year and will often hire just before each term, depending on its needs. If hiring needs to be done, we conduct a screening/ orientation session prior to the term. Orientation dates are Dec. 15/Mar. 15/July 1 and Sept. 15. (Call or e-mail to check if session will be held).
The ALC cannot offer any help with visas and residence permits until after a teacher has been hired. Salaries are paid on per-teaching hour basis in Syrian Pounds, a non-covertible local currency. Teaching rates are based on educational back ground and previous verifiable ELT (English language teaching) experience. Phone or e-mail for training in communicative methodology to each newly-hired teacher.
The cost of living in Syria is fairly reasonable and affordable housing is readily available. The climate is generally pleasant, the people are friendly and the living environment is unstressful. Damascus is an ideal place for learning Arabic or studying Middle Eastern culture.
